Biogas, Food Waste Recycling, CHP and Wastewater Treatment in Philadelphia

October 24, 2017 @ 8:30 am - 1:30 pm

This half-day workshop will be held at a water pollution control plant, involve classroom teaching, a tour of an existing facility anaerobic digester and combined heat and power system (CHP), and lunch. Come learn how Philadelphia could merge their zero waste goal with existing wastewater infrastructure, food waste collection and recycling and biogas production. 2 PDHs Available.

One of the essential components needed to achieve this goal is recycling organic material instead of disposing of it. The US-EPA has established a food waste hierarchy that shows the best way to prevent food waste is to buy less food and thereby waste less and next best is to feed hungry people and animals. But if the food is spoiled or you can’t do that, food scraps should be recycled using anaerobic digestion (AD).  The integration of food waste into existing AD systems is one way to successfully recycling  organics.  Plus it makes renewable energy and great soil products. This workshop focuses on this pathway.
