Pennsylvania farming gets a hand-up in new state budget

To farmers and their advocates, the PA Farm Bill initiative passed in tandem with the state’s $34 billion spending package is the political equivalent of an inch of rain, followed by days of sunshine after several years of economic struggle.

Pennsylvania lost more than 6,000 farms between 2012 and 2017, according to the state’s most recent agricultural census, and now boasts a total of 53,157. That trend is believed to have only continued last year, as dairy farmers in particular were hampered by drops in milk prices and flat demand. More >>
